Police: Grenade dropped by man suspected of breaking into vehicle was not explosive

Pueblo Police say they were chasing a man who they suspected of breaking into a vehicle Thursday morning when he dropped what they thought was a live grenade.

The incident happened in the 2400 block of Alma, near Prairie Ave. and Tucci Ln. on the south side of the city.

Jose Raul Mena, 24, was arrested and faces charges for trespassing, attempted auto theft, resisting arrest and violation of a protection order.

Police say a close inspection of the suspected grenade by the bomb squad determined that the device had been altered and did not have an explosive charge.
