Mother defends son in El Paso County child sex case

An El Paso County man is in custody accused of sexually assaulting a child.

Deputies say Christopher Rader may have babysat children in a Colorado Springs neighborhood near Red Rock Canyon Open Space.

Christopher James Rader was arrested on July 29 for sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

Rader’s mother, Hope Smith, says her son is innocent.

“My son would never, ever, ever hurt a child,” said Hope Smith.

Smith denies accusations that her son sexually assaulted children he was caring for.

“If it was true, believe me I would call police. I love my son but I disagree with that 100 percent,” said Smith.

Smith says her son’s ex-girlfriend lied and turned Rader in to police.

“I believe and I can’t say her name cause I can’t prove it. But, I believe that she’s the one who brought this up and it’s completely false,” said Smith.

A background check revealed Rader’s records dating back to 2009. Records show he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault, false identification and false reporting to police.

El Paso County Sheriff’s office is concerned more victims are out there. If you have any information, you’re asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 390-5555.

Rader is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.
