Hunting regulations: What’s legal, where?
Lion hunting has been suspended in Zimbabwe following last month’s death of Cecil the lion.
The news comes amid controversy that Cecil’s brother Jericho, may have been shot and killed illegally Saturday. The death of Cecil’s sibling has not been confirmed.
“Only a hand-held bow is legal during the archery season, no crossbows,” Kurt Geist from Bill Pellegrino’s Archery Hut said regarding Colorado’s hunting regulations.
In Colorado, it is illegal to hunt within city limits.
“The Bureau of Land Management and wilderness areas, any of those areas are open for the most part to all hunters,” said Geist.
In Africa, the center of controversy over the killing of Cecil the lion, there’s a different set of rules.
“Once you’re overseas and down in Africa, things change completely because all of the wildlife in Africa are personally owned. Not like here in Colorado, where everything is free. Everything there is owned by someone there,” said Geist.
Authorities in Zimbabwe say Minnesota hunter and dentist Walter Palmer, illegally killed Cecil with a bow and arrow last month.
Palmer responded saying, “to my knowledge everything about this trip was legal and properly handled and conducted.”
In the meantime, a hunting ban is in place for lions, leopards and elephants in Zimbabwe.
No formal charges have been filed against Palmer and the investigation is ongoing.
