State Archeologist says skull found at Fountain construction site is ancient

A State Archeologist has examined a skull that was found in Fountain this week and says it may be thousands of years old, according to police.

Engineers at a construction site found the skull, believed to be that of a child, Wednesday in the Ventana subdivision in the 10000 block of Old Pueblo Road.

The person who found it said he removed it to look at it and then put it back where he originally found it.

State Archeologist Thomas Carr examined the skull and the burial site and told police that the skull is ancient, and may be anywhere from several hundred years old to several thousand years old. Carr told police that the skull belonged to a Native American female.

Police say the state has taken possession of the remains. A final resting place has not yet been determined.
