City mowers overwhelmed by high grasses, weeds

The rain has eased but vegetation keeps growing at parks and other city property in Colorado Springs, and some park users are dissatisfied with the city’s response.

Ute Valley Park on the city’s northwest side has drawn complaints from several residents who say grasses and weeds are so high that it’s hard to see rattlesnakes that may be on or near park trails.

Workers mowed a small area along a street near the park last week because drivers couldn’t see around a corner, but some residents want the city to do more.

Kurt Schroeder, the city’s operations manager for parks and recreation, said his small staff and several private contractors can’t keep up with the growth.

“We’re just finishing the first round of mowing,” Schroeder said. “I’d say we’re probably three or four weeks behind where we normally would be.”

Schroeder also said recent wet weather delayed mowing efforts but he hopes workers will catch up before the vegetation dries and becomes potential fuel for fires.

The city asks residents for patience as it tries to make better progress.
