Colorado Native Recalls Long Ago Days in Colorado Springs
Colorado is about to celebrate a birthday this weekend.
On Aug. 1, 1876, it became the 38th state.
In the years since, Colorado has seen millions of people move here, but there are still plenty of natives.
One of those natives is Helen Baber. She was born in Calhan and moved to Colorado Springs with her husband in 1950.
Four generations of her family have lived here. And she’s seen the city change over the years.
She said, “I think Union (Boulevard) was the city limit, because there was nothing out here. Where I live was the Union Printers (Home) corn field.”
Much of the early growth of Colorado is thanks to the railroads.
Colorado Springs was founded as a whistle stop on the railroad that was built by its founder, William Jackson Palmer.
