Rough stretch of Academy Boulevard resurfaced

A particularly bumpy section of busy Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs is getting a new layer of asphalt.

About two weeks ago, workers began repaving Academy between Bijou Street and Palmer Park Boulevard, a distance of 1.3 miles. The project is scheduled for completion in two weeks.

The city is repaving Academy because it is so filled with potholes.

“I live near Citadel Mall and I know that road well,” David Ballard, a local driver, said. “It’s nice to see the roads getting done. It happened overnight. It was kind of nice to see. It isn’t just Academy, it’s a few other roads that I’ve noticed also.”

The work is done at night to limit impacts on traffic and nearby businesses.

While one merchant in the area said it’s being negatively affected, another has had no problems.

“There’s different accesses, even off of Academy, to our location,” Shawna Chambers, manager of the Black Bear Diner, said. “So (customers will) find a way in.”
