Springs to get secure flagpole after U.S. flag burned
A New flag pole is now coming to city hall in Colorado Springs after the American flag was burned on the city property.
City council members says security must be addressed, after a suspect somehow snipped the flag off the pole and burned it, without getting caught on camera.
KRDO spoke with veteran Travis Weston, who’s getting comfortable at city hall. He’s guarding the flag until it’s secure.
“I don’t understand why anyone would ever be motivated to burn the American flag. It makes me sick to my stomach as a veteran. Men and women died for that flag,” Watson said.
Watson is driving to Colorado Springs from Denver every night after work.
He started his first watch feeling angry and offended.
“My question to you is why? But on top of that, don’t show your face…because you are hated by many right now,” said Watson, referring to the person responsible for the vandalism.
City hall is now getting a new flag pole with an internal halyard that keeps the tie inside the pole.
“That is it’s something that’s inexcusable, we are not going to allow to happen again,” City Council member Keith King said.
King says council will also considering additional security cameras, so the new flag will last and keep flying 24/7.
“I don’t want to give in to this. I don’t want to give into this type of attitude in this city, or let these people think that we are going to back down to something that’s despicable,” King said.
Colorado Springs police have no leads on a suspect.
The person responsible could face a fine and jail time.
