Police see increase in trailer thefts
Police are seeing an increase in trailer thefts in Colorado Springs, and they advice owners to take safety measures.
On Tuesday, Michael Underwood, owner of Willowstone Antique Marketplace, discovered one of his trailers was gone. Inside, he had thousands of dollars worth of antiques and memorabilia.
Surveillance video shows a man latching the trailer unto a white pickup truck and driving off with it.
“It’s irritating,” Underwood said. “We try to do right by people and we just hope people do right by us, but it doesn’t always work that way. It’s kind of frustrating.”
Police said trailers are an easy target for thieves, but owners can take precautions.
They advise owners to put a lock on the ball of the hitch and to write the VIN number in an additional location of the trailer, other than the VIN plate.
As for Underwood, he is offering a $5,000 for anyone who can return his trailer and get the thief charged.
If you know anything about what happened or recognize the white pickup truck in the surveillance video, call police at (719) 444-7000 or CrimeStoppers at (719) 634-STOP (7867.)
