Investigators: Man told wife ‘just die already’ while strangling her

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says allegations of past crimes surfaced during an attempted murder investigation.

The incident happened in Caon City on June 29, 2015, but the sheriff’s office did not release information about it until July 20, 2015.

The sheriff’s office says that on June 29 at 8:44 p.m., Steven Whitt, 53, called 911 and told the dispatcher that he saw his wife crash through a gate at the end of their driveway. It says he told the dispatcher that he went outside and found “a lot” of blood in the garden, but that he didn’t know what had happened.

The sheriff’s office says that while Whitt was on the phone with 911, his wife showed up at St. Thomas More Hospital saying that she had been assaulted by her husband.

Whitt’s wife told deputies that her husband had hit her with rocks and was choking her. She said that he said “just die already” while trying to suffocate her. Whitt explained to investigators that after regaining consciousness after being attacked near her garden, she got in her car, rammed the gate and drove herself to the hospital.

The sheriff’s office says Steven Whitt was called to the hospital and that when he arrived; there were cuts and scrapes on his arms, which he told deputies he got while working on his truck. Whitt also told investigators that he took a shower and changed clothes before going to the hospital.

Whitt was arrested at the hospital. He faces numerous charges for allegedly assaulting his wife, including attempted second degree murder.

The sheriff’s office says that while questioning another person about this case, additional allegations from the past surfaced. As a result, Whitt faces additional charges including sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
