UPDATE: Father tackles burglar in family’s front lawn

A Colorado Springs dad said he tackled a burglar in his front lawn while his wife and children were inside eating dinner.

The incident happened Saturday night at a home in the 3800 block of Pony Tracks Dr. near N. Carefree Circle.

Marcos Ruiz was going into his garage he noticed someone in his car. He turned the lights on and yelled and the man took off. Ruiz chased him.

“I didn’t care if he had a gun, a knife, a stick, anything. All I wanted was to protect my family,” said Ruiz.

Ruiz was able to tackle the man. He said the man escaped twice, but then fell to the ground so Ruiz was able to catch up and pin him down again. As Ruiz called police, the man escaped a third time and got away. However, Ruiz had his hat and K-9 units used the scent to find the alleged burglar.

A K-9 team took the suspect into custody. The suspect’s alleged partners were also found and arrested.Police arrested24-year-old Michael Showalter, 23-year-old Jeffery Gaw and 23-year-old Jamielle Owens. The three are facing charges of burglary, trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ruiz said he has no regrets about chasing the suspect.

“I work for my stuff. I think they should have to work for theirs. I don’t think it’s fair they come to people’s house and take what they want,” said Ruiz.

He would do it all over again if the three men tried to burglarize his home again.

“If they do, I’ll be here. I’m not going anywhere. They didn’t scare me at all,” said Ruiz.
