Couple struck by lightning in Chaffee County was celebrating wedding

A man and woman who were hit by lightning while hiking in Chaffee County Friday were married just six days earlier.

The strike happened at timberline on Denny Creek Trail, which leads to Mount Yale, the sheriff’s office said.

Kathleen Bartlett, 31, was killed. Her new husband, Ryan Pocius, was airlifted to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs and is recovering from his injuries.

The couple is from Denver.

Nearly two dozen people have been struck by lightning in Colorado this year.
