Suspicious package investigated outside NORAD not dangerous

A suspicious package that was investigated at the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station Thursday turned out not to be dangerous, according to the 21st Space Wing.

Authorities said the package was found at around 10 a.m. in the mail distribution center, which is located in an administrative building at CMAFS.

Responders from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base, Fort Carson and El Paso County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

No operational missions inside the complex were affected.

Explosive ordnance disposal and bioenvironmental engineering teams from Peterson, and a hazardous materials team from Fort Carson investigated the scene.

“I have full confidence in our emergency responders who worked diligently to resolve the situation. Our partnership with area responders worked flawlessly to ensure the safety of our personnel and the neighboring community,” said Col. Gary Cornn, 721st Mission Support Group and CMAFS installation commander.

An investigation will determine the package’s origin.
