Lightning thought to have killed 2 campers near Aspen

Authorities say lightning might have killed two people whose bodies were found in a tent near Aspen.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office says hikers found the bodies of a man and a boy Wednesday morning south of the Maroon Bells parking lot. The Aspen Times reports two juveniles associated with the campers were found walking toward the lot on their own and were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Authorities have not released the names or ages of anyone involved.

The coroner’s office says initial indications suggest the deaths were caused by a lightning strike, but an autopsy has yet to be performed.

The Maroon Bells are two 14,000-foot peaks in the Elk Mountains.
