Campers killed by lightning near Aspen identified as father and son from Colorado Springs

A father and son who were killed when lightning struck their tent during a camping trip near Aspen have been identified as Jeff Beard, 41, and Cameron Beard, 14, from Colorado Springs.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office says hikers found the bodies of a man and a boy Wednesday morning south of the Maroon Bells parking lot. The Aspen Times reports two juveniles associated with the campers were found walking toward the lot on their own and were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The Maroon Bells are two 14,000-foot peaks in the Elk Mountains.
