Pueblo County hatches plan to route traffic around washed out Overton Road

Pueblo County says it’s in talks with a landowner to build a temporary alternate route around a flood-damaged road.

Overton Road washed out on May 20, 2015. It has been impassable ever since.

Construction on the new temporary road is pending the signing of a legal agreement between the county and the owner of Pueblo Springs Ranch. The county says it hopes that will happen in the next few days.

“We’re ready to get started as soon as the agreement is signed,” Pueblo County Director of Engineering and Public Works Alf Randall said.

The county says Overton Road is a vital link for farmers and property owners in the area, as well as the primary alternate route between I-25 and the El Paso County line. It also says that temporary repairs and mitigation work must be done in order for the county to be eligible for federal disaster assistance to permanently fix Overton.

The temporary road’s estimated cost is about $300,000 and will be paid for initially by Pueblo County.

The County may be eligible for federal reimbursement funds from FEMA or the Federal Highway Administration depending on the approval of the State’s disaster assistance request.
