‘Most Dangerous’ intersections in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs police told us the “most dangerous” intersections in town. The list is compiled based on traffic accidents in 2014.

I-25 and Woodmen is considered the most dangerous. That intersection saw the most accidents last year.

In second, I-25 and Nevada, shortly behind I-25 and Cimmarron and I-25 and Garden of the Gods.

City engineers said more people on the roads equals more accidents.

“Nevada has a fairly high volume of traffic, but most of the accidents on Nevada are simply because of driver error,” said Kathleen Krager, transportation manager.

The sound of traffic on Nevada is familiar for one nearby neighbor.

“It does seem like there has been a heightened amount of accidents over the course of the last year,” said Mechelle Haflich.

Haflich lives and works on Nevada and East Jackson.

“A few months ago, I witnessed a accident where the car was flied over. I don’t know the reasons why but I think its a fast traveling road and people aren’t paying attention,” said Haflich.

On Sunday, a two-vehicle accident happened at Nevada and East Jackson. A Sedan split in half when it was struck by a Corvette at a high speed.

“It had to do with excessive speed and possible DUI. That’s something as an engineer we can’t overcome,” said Krager.

Krager said the city can only fix intersections where accidents are happening in a low traffic area. Nevada sees a lot of traffic.

“It’s very typical for interchanges to have a high number of accidents,” said Krager.

“This is definitely one of the worst places to be driving,” said John Parris.

“I think it would be wise to be a little more vigilant when traveling Nevada, either north or soundbound,” said Haflich.
