Arkansas River restrictions in Pueblo County lifted

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Parks and Wildlife Office (CPW) and the Pueblo Fire Department are reopening the Arkansas River in Pueblo County.

In late June, each of the agencies closed off portions of the Arkansas River to inner-tubing, boarding, non-whitewater boats, and swimming (even with a life vest) due to the swift running water and dangers it presented.

Though not much fluctuation is expected, Monique Mullis, Lake Pueblo State Park Manager reminds river goers, “The water levels can fluctuate in the river. Life jackets are always required when tubing in the Arkansas.”

Pueblo’s Fire Chief Shawn Shelton says “While restrictions have been lifted the river still holds many dangers. People should exercise caution around the water and always wear a life jacket.” He would also like to remind city residents and visitors that the area around the low head dam below Pueblo City Park is always off limits to both swimming and wading.

Pueblo resident Joe Rosenbrock said he can’t wait to get back in the water.

“I’ll probably go and test it out. Tubing is always a fun little activity. I’ve done it in my hometown on the lake. Now that it is lifted, it’s something to do in Pueblo,” he said.

The three agencies will continue to monitor the water levels and flow throughout the season.
