Construction that will close I-25 and Fillmore rescheduled
The first of two closures that were scheduled as part of the I-25 and Fillmore interchange reconstruction project was cancelled Thursday night because of the weather.
It has been rescheduled for Sunday night.
I-25 will be closed in both directions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. so that crews can begin work on installing six, 180,000 pound bridge girders. An identical closure is planned for Monday night to complete the work.
Traffic will be detoured off of, and then back onto the interstate using the exit and entrance ramps.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says you should also be aware of the following detours:
Southbound I-25 – can access westbound Fillmore. For eastbound Fillmore, drivers should exit at Garden of the Gods Road or Fontanero Street.
Northbound I-25 – can access eastbound Fillmore. For westbound Fillmore, drivers should exit at Garden of the Gods
Eastbound Fillmore – can access southbound I-25. For northbound I-25, drivers should take southbound I-25 to Fontanero and turnaround to access northbound I-25.
Westbound Fillmore – can access northbound I-25. For southbound I-25, drivers should go north on I-25 to Garden of the Gods and turnaround to access southbound I-25.
I-25 will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. on Friday, July 10, and Monday, July 13.
The current diamond interchange at I-25 and Fillmore is being replaced with a diverging diamond interchange, where both directions of traffic on Fillmore will cross on the opposite side of the bridge. CDOT says the change will also increase the vehicle capacity of the overpass by removing the left turn signal phase with a free-flow left turn movement.
Construction is scheduled to be finished in 2016.
The below video shows how traffic will flow through the interchange when construction is complete.
