Police arrest man after dog found shot with slit throat

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of animal cruelty after he allegedly shot a dog after it snapped at a child.

The Montrose Daily Press reports that 55-year-old Howard Mike Kelly of Olathe was detained Wednesday on suspicion of animal cruelty.

Ashlee Abeyta arrived home Saturday to find one of her family dogs severely wounded. Montrose County Sheriff Rick Dunlap says the 10-month-old pit-bull named Flex was shot in the top of his head and the side of his face. The dog’s throat was also cut.

Kelly allegedly told deputies that he shot the dog after it snapped at his toddler niece who had sat on the dog. He denied cutting Flex’s throat.

Flex has managed to survive his injuries.

Formal charges have not been filed against Kelly.
