Red Rock Canyon trails reopen

After being closed for more than a month, a popular hiking spot is back open.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space closed in mid-May after heavy rain and flooding caused damage to some of the trails.

“We decided it was pretty unsafe for the folks to be in there,” said park supervisor Scott Abbott. “We’ve spent weeks and weeks doing a lot of trail repair, a lot of regrading of some of the trail systems, just to put it in a situation where people can come back and enjoy it.”

The park opened to the public Friday morning. Hikers are ready to get back to some of their favorite trails.

“We couldn’t wait to get out here,” said Margaret Rosielle, who hikes in Red Rock Canyon with her husband regularly. “It’s wonderful because it’s the closest trail system to where we live, so it’s nice to be back.”

The reopening is a chance for people to experience the park for the first time.

“I’ve always wanted to come out here,” said hiker Larry Carter. “I like to walk my dog early in the morning and there’s not many people here right now.”

The park is open but city crews will continue repairing damage for the next several weeks.

“The park has changed slightly and there is still some storm damage to our trail systems,” Abbott said. “We really just want to caution people to be careful on their first couple hikes in here. They will see some new things, but for the most part, it’s ready to go and ready to enjoy.”
