Safety Priority at Memorial Park Firework Show

Colorado Springs biggest firework show is getting ready to go off with a bang. The professional production, called “Summer Symphony.” uses more than 1,000 fireworks to light up the sky.

Hours of labor and set of safety guidelines, is what it takes to get the show off the ground.

“We’re all working together to make sure this event is as safe as possible for every attendee,” said Nathan Newbrough, president of Colorado Springs Philharmonic.

More than a dozen people put the entire show together.

Tony Quintana is part of that crew. He’s helped put it together for the past 18 years.

“We have to make sure we’re lifting properly, taking care of attaching all the safety gear,” said Quintana.

As people could imagine, it’s a lengthy process.

“It’s probably going to be six or seven hours. Tomorrow we’ll come in and do another three or four hours,” said Quintana.

Set up crews work with equipment over 18,000 pounds, a 40-foot stage and more than 1,000 fireworks.

“Got to make sure that it’s all safe and up to code. The firework display is all about safety and it’s the biggest firework show in the region, so we have to make sure we’re protecting our community,” said Newbrough.

Last year, 90,000 people filled the park.

“This year, we’re expecting to break that record if the weather holds. so we want everyone to come out and experience this great community tradition together,” said Newbrough.

The show is free and open to the public. The firework show is expected to begin around 9pm.
