Pikes Peak International Hill Climb attracts thousands of race fans

A long-standing tradition on America’s Mountain is back and faster than ever.

Thousands of race fans watched the 93rd Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Sunday.

“It’s one of those bucket list things,” said Chris Barker, a Kansas resident who took his family to the race. “My wife and I were on our honeymoon out here 34 years ago and heard about the hill climb. Now we’re finally here.”

The course is more than 12 miles long and is physically demanding for drivers.

“I’m too chicken to even drive up to the top of the mountain, so the fact that they’re doing it up there is amazing to me,” said Corisa Hopingardner, who was watching the race for the first time.

After a brief afternoon rain delay, the track was shortened. Drivers were only able to drive halfway to the summit.

Electric cars and motorcycles took some spectators by surprise.

“I didn’t even hear them coming. All of a sudden they are right here,” said race fan Rex Strable. “It may be the wave of the future I guess.”

More than 130 drivers put their cars and motorcycles to the test this year. When it comes to thrills, some race fans said nothing compares to the hill climb.

“There’s something for everyone,” Barker said. “It’s become really sophisticated for one thing, and it’s impressive to see how much prep time a team will put in for an eight or 10-minute run.”
