Mother nature takes Colorado Springs by storm
Severe thunderstorms brought damaging hail and dangerous lightning to Colorado Springs on June 28, 2015.
Hail the size of quarters was widespread across the eastern half of the city during the early evening hours, and a spectacular lightning show lit up the skies over the west side during the 8:00 hour.
That storm also prompted flash flood warnings and flood advisories for the region.
Lightning struck a tree in Tracy Ummel’s backyard in southern Colorado Springs.
“We were here in the house. We were enjoying our evening and we heard a really loud crash,” Ummel said. “It sounded like an airplane was crashing into our house.”
Ummel said the storm is a powerful reminder to stay indoors when it’s lightning.
“I think they’re getting a little too close to humans and homes and we need to be extra careful,” she said. “It’s really scary. Especially when it hits so close to home.”
