Millen takes Hill Climb title in race that saw plenty of weather-related drama
The weather stole the show during the 93rd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The day started with bright sunshine and warm temperatures, but that changed quickly during the afternoon.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued as a storm packing heavy rain, hail and dangerous lightning moved overhead.
The race was delayed for approximately 90 minutes because of the weather, beginning just after 1 p.m.
When the storm cleared, there was so much hail on the summit of Pikes Peak that race officials worried four wheel drive may be required to get people down. Plows were brought in to clear the hail and the decision was made to move the finish line down the mountain to Glen Cove.
The truncated race resumed shortly after 2:30 p.m.
A handful of crashes occurred during Sunday’s race, but no injuries were reported.
The results are currently unofficial, but it appears Rhys Millen from New Zealand took the overall title in the race with his electric car. His official time was 9:07.222.
