Donkey Derby Days in Cripple Creek

donkeys are out in cripple creek this weekend. it’s all for the 84th annual donkey derby days. the popular festival dates back to the 1930s when a local businessman wanted to draw more people to cripple creek in the summer months and as krdo newschannel 13’s zach pagano finds out the festival is doing just that. these days it only takes a few donkeys to draw thousands of visitors. we came up to see the donkey derby days the annual festival and parade is showing off cripple creek’s wild side. we love the parade. there’s always something interesting and unique. you never know what’s coming down the street. the festival’s main attraction is also its namesake. part of the donkey derby days experience is being able to get up close and personal, and even feed some of the donkeys. our oldest one, right there, we figure is 24 years old. bill loop helps raise money to take care of the animals. he says they are an important part of the city’s history. these donkeys represent the donkeys that were used in the mines 100 years ago. families may come to see the donkeys… five years ago, when we moved here, we came. we liked it so much, we’ve come back every year. but they keep finding reasons to come back every year. in crippple creek, zach pagano, krdo newschannel 13. if you didn’t get a chance to see the donkeys for yourself … the festival continues tomorrow in cripple creek. if you didn’t get a chance to see the donkeys for yourself … the festival continues tomorrow in cripple creek. our very own krdo team took third place in the donkey derby race today. it was the second year in a row the team took home the third place trophy. new video tonight of one nation’s worst terrorist attack in history. the insight it trophy.
