Suspect in explosion near NAACP office reaches plea deal

A man accused of setting off a small explosion near the NAACP office in Colorado Springs has reached a plea agreement.

The Gazette reports 44-year-old Thaddeus Murphy is due in court Aug. 3, but details of the agreement will not be released until then. Murphy has pleaded not guilty to arson and possessing a firearm as a felon.

The Jan. 6 blast drew attention because of its proximity to an office of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization.

But Murphy told investigators he had money problems and was actually targeting his accountant. The building has a sign for an accountant’s business, but it reportedly has been closed for years.

The building wasn’t seriously damaged, and no one was injured.

It’s unclear if Murphy knew if his accountant died the previous June.
