Veteran receives mortgage-free home

A wounded veteran has a new place to call home and it’s mortgage free.

The Homes for Our Troops organization built the Monument home for Army Sgt. Matthew Spang.

“These veterans give so much of themselves to protect our freedom and independence. Now it’s time to protect their freedom and independence,” said Tim McHale, Home for Our Troops president and CEO.

While on his second deployment in Afghanistan, Spang’s vehicle was hit by two improvised explosive devices. Spang lost both legs below the knees.

Spang’s new home is built for mobility with a roll-in shower, lowered counters and widened doorways.

“It’s a lot more accessible, I can move around a lot easier,” Spang said. “I can do a 360 and turn all the way around in my kitchen, which I can’t do in my apartment right now.”

Homes for Our Troops is dedicated to improving the lives of injured veterans and their families.

“This lifts a big burden off their back. They already have a burden from their injuries that they are trying to overcome,” McHale said. “It’s a moral obligation of our society to take care of those men and women who sacrificed so much.”

Spang said he is grateful for the support and resources.

“This is going to change my life for the better,” he said. “I’m looking forward to having friends and family over for Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
