Hail and flooding rains pummel Colorado

Severe thunderstorms brought flash flooding and copious amounts of hail to many areas of southern Colorado Thursday, and more rain is in the forecast Friday.

Flash flood warnings that were issued Thursday night have expired.

In Colorado Springs, street flooding was widespread across the city Thursday night. The fire department was called to Tia Juana Street near Platte Avenue to rescue two women whose cars were partially submerged. It took tow trucks two hours to get to the vehicles once the water finally receded. The road re-opened just before 10 p.m.

“It was hailing and storming. I couldn’t see anything. I used my GPS to get home; it took me down this back street. I didn’t know it was a lake, I drove right into it,” said Jasmine Caso, the driver of one of the submerged vehicles.

Video from a KRDO viewer showed water bubbling up out of a manhole at the intersection of Cedar and Dale and video from another viewer showed fast flowing water flooding the intersection of 8th and Moreno.

Sanborn Road in Eastern El Paso County was closed between Ellicott Road and Baggett Road because of heavy rain. The county said the road was impassable.

A tornado was reported near Springfield in southeastern Colorado Thursday night, with reports of power poles down along Highway 160, County Road 21 and on Main Street in Springfield.
