Police warn of ‘spoofers’ impersonating CSPD

The Colorado Springs Police Department says someone is using the practice of caller ID spoofing to impersonate employees of the department.

Spoofing is the practice of deliberately falsifying a telephone number or name relayed on caller ID.

In this case, police say the spoofers are claiming to be with the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Falcon Division and are making the 719-444-7240 phone number show up on the victims’ caller ID.

719-444-7240 is the correct phone number for the Falcon Division, but police say the calls are not coming from anyone in the department.

Police say the callers, which have been both men and women, claimed that the victims’ family member was in trouble and that they needed to send money.

The types of trouble mentioned ranged from unpaid traffic tickets and warrants to tax evasion.

Police say the callers would only identify themselves as the “lead investigator” from the Falcon Division, but would not provide their name or other information about themselves.

The Colorado Springs Police Department says it never calls people and demands money, and that legitimate employees of the police department always fully identify themselves both in person and over the phone.
