Alleged victim tells investigators graphic details about cheerleading coach

A former cheerleading coach accused of sexually assaulting a child is out on bond.

A judge posted a $20,000 bond for Mitchell Greenstreet, 22, on Monday. The alleged victim’s father had asked the judge not to post a bond for Greenstreet.

According to the arrest affidavit for Greenstreet, police learned about the alleged assaults on Friday. The alleged victim, 13, told investigators graphic details about how Greenstreet allegedly abused her during private cheerleading lessons on two occasions at Colorado Cheer Academy Allstars in Colorado Springs.

There’s no law in Colorado that requires a youth sports organization to run a background check on employees or volunteers, though it wouldn’t have mattered in the case of Greenstreet since he has a clean record.

Craig Smith, chief investigator with BrightStar Investigations, told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he still recommends parents do their own research before choosing a sports camp.

“One thing I would do is check the reviews for the organization,” Smith said. “If you really want to dig into somebody, I think most private investigators can do a simple background check for not an extreme amount of expense.”

Smith also recommended checking the Colorado sex offender registry online.

“Most of all, always trust your gut,” he said. “Your gut’s the most important thing.”

Greenstreet is scheduled to be back in court next week.
