UPDATE: Former cheerleading coach accused of sexual assault on a child
Colorado Springs Police say a former cheerleading coach has been accused of sexual assault on a child, and detectives are worried there could be more potential victims.
Mitchell Greenstreet, 22, worked as a coach at Colorado Cheer Academy Allstars. He no longer works there.
The investigation into Greenstreet began on June 5 when police received a call from the family of a girl who said she was sexually assaulted by her cheerleading coach.
Greenstreet was arrested the next day.
Greenstreet faces a charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. His bond is set at $20,000. A judge who read Greenstreet’s charges in a video advisement on Monday said the victim was under 15 years old.
The victim’s parents asked the judge to hold Greenstreet without bond, but the judge said he could not.
KRDO NewsChannel 13 is withholding the victim’s parent’s name to protect the victim’s identity.
“I want you to know that my daughter is terrified. It’s all over the internet now. I would ask that there is no bail,” said the victim’s father. “I would request that he get the max.”
Greenstreet responded and asked the judge to set his bond for a fair amount.
“I can ensure no contact will be had toward the family or the victim and that I have people in place to make sure that doesn’t happen,” said Greenstreet.
The owner ofColorado Cheer Academy Allstars agreed to speak if KRDO NewsChannel 13 didn’t show her face on camera. She said she started to get suspicious and and as soon as she was able to confirm her suspicions, she notified the victim’s parents.
“I don’t know if it was a relationship, I don’t know the whole story. I know what I was told and I know there were some things that I didn’t think was OK. I don’t know, like silly things like the text message on his phone had hearts next to her name,” said the owner.
She said her athletes were at a fundraising event at a Sky Sox game and she noticed Greenstreet and the victim alone. She knew it was time to step in.
“That’s when I kind of said that’s enough and I went to her parents,” said the owner.
She said Greenstreet passed a background check and had a strong background in cheerleading. Before this incident, she considered him an excellent coach and a friend.
“I guess you never really know who somebody is,” said the coach.
She is devastated and crushed.
“That’s my athlete and that’s my family and the gym is something I put so much passion into. I don’t know. I don’t know. It’s all hard,” said the coach.
Colorado Cheer Academy Allstars posted this statement on its Facebook page:
“CCAA Management and Owners send our hearts out to the family and victim involved. This is devastating to our whole family and will take time to heal for all involved. The safety of our athletes is our number one focus and will always be so. We ask for your continued support and patience as we prepare to move forward through these hard times. Respectfully- Amanda, Owner.”
Police say that because Greenstreet previously had access to children, they are worried there could be additional potential victims in this case.
