Rainy weeks bring increased mosquito activity
The rain in the last several weeks has caused increased mosquito activity in southern Colorado.
“I’ve been here 15 years, and I’ve never experienced this many mosquito bites, that’s for sure,” Colorado Springs resident Katie Sage said.
El Paso County Public Health said the first hatch-off came somewhat early this year, because of all the rain. Now that it’s getting warmer out, the mosquito activity is starting. Lee Griffen, with El Paso County Public Health, said the more rain we get, the more standing water there is, and the more mosquitoes will breed.
More than an annoyance, the mosquitoes can also be a health concern.
“The main health concern with bug bites, mosquito bites number one, you get the itching, you get the inconvenience, they can become infected if you’re not careful, and of course West Nile virus is a big concern,” KRDO Medical Expert Dr. John Torres said. “West Nile Virus has already been detected in Texas, it’s going to get here pretty soon too. You don’t want to get that.”
Experts recommend the four Ds:
– Drain all standing water in your home
– Be extra watchful around Dusk and Dawn
– Dress in long-sleeves and clothes mosquitoes can’t bite through.
– Wear bug spray with DEET.
