National Weather Service Rates Colorado Tornado an EF3 at Highest Damage Point

The National Weather Service has rated a tornado that touched down near Berthoud an EF3, at its highest damage point.

The rating is based on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which rates the strength of tornadoes.

An EF3 tornado is considered severe, with winds gusts up to 140 mph. The highest rating in an EF5, which is considered devastating.

The tornado was one of several spotted on June 4 th , 2015.

Information from the National Weather Service:

The tornado that occurred along the Boulder and Larimer county line on Thursday, June 4th has been rated an EF3 at its highest damage point, with maximum winds estimated at 135 to 140 mph. The path length was 5 miles long with a width of 200 yards. The tornado first touched down at 6:34 PM approximately 3 miles south and Berthoud, and then tracked to the West/Northwest and lifted at 647 PM 6 miles southwest of Berthoud. The majority of the damage was EF1, with some areas of EF2, and a few small areas of EF3.
