Pueblo medical center celebrates cancer survivors

The nation is celebrating people who survived cancer.

St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo joined in the festivities by having a Cancer Survivor Celebration at the Rusted Poppy.

The event was covered with paper cranes, which, in the Japanese culture, is a symbol long life.

That’s the message the hospital wanted to get out to cancer survivors, that they want them to live a long life after a tough fight.

Natasha Hagenau, who is a breast cancer survivor, said when she won the fight, it was a blessing.

“My plastic surgeon came in and told me I am cancer-free. He came in with a big smile on his face and he said ‘Did you hear? You don’t have any cancer anymore.’ I looked at my husband and he looked at me and our eyes were big like glory to the lord we were so excited,” she said.

The medical center treats more than 700 cancer patients a year.
