Remembering Monument Creek Flood of 1935

today marks the 80th anniversary of what is called the worst flood in colorado springs history. it was the monument creek flood of 1935. it came on memorial day that year … it was the city’s wettest may on record that same year… at least until that record was broken this month. 18 people died in the disaster. “Only a third of the rain had dropped prior to Memorial Day, as best as i can tell from the newspapers. What happened is a lot of rain occurred on Memorial Day and that caused tremendous damage.” the flood destroyed all but one bridge across the creek, and caused extensive flooding downtown and in monument valley park. local hikers
