Man trapped in truck after spill, crash in Hardscrabble Canyon

At 4:30 p.m. Friday, a truck hauling used motor oil went off the highway near the 18 mile marker on Highway 96 in the Hardscrabble Canyon. The driver was trapped inside for a short time. He was eventually transferred to an area hospital.

According to Custer County Emergency Management, an undetermined amount of used motor leaked from the tank, firefighters and hazmat officials were quickly able to stop the leak. Clean-up was underway by early evening.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

One lane of traffic is open. Expect delays in the area, drive with caution.
