Heavy rains cause roof and ceiling damage at CJC
El Paso County says cleanup and repairs are underway after heavy rain caused damage at the Criminal Justice Center.
The county says that on May 24, a section of drywall material in the ceiling above the kitchen became saturated with water and collapsed.
The damaged area was temporarily sealed and isolated and the county says the kitchen is still operating despite the damage.
The damaged building houses inmates and the sheriff’s office Detention Bureau.
Testing was done to ensure the safety of inmates and employees.
Tests for asbestos came back negative onMay 28, tests for mold came back positive onMay 28 and test results for fecal coliform are expected onJune 4.
The county says that on the afternoon of May 29, El Paso County Public Health completed an additional review of the damaged area and ordered an industrial mitigation process to clean up the damaged area as well as installation of temporary positive flow ventilation systems.
The CJC was built in 1987 and was renovated as part of an expansion project in 2005.
