District 70 grants District 60 bus access in the county

Students in Pueblo West who ride a bus to District 60 schools will be allowed to continue taking the bus.

The Pueblo County School Board (District 70) gave permission to Pueblo City Schools to bus 38 students from the county into the city’s boundaries.

Dolores Huerta Preparatory Academy Principal Crystal Gallegos and Cesar Chavez Academy Principal Lori Montanez asked District 70 to continue allowing the charter schools to provide transportation to students at three bus stops in Pueblo West.

“Our parents have the choice of what school they attend,” Gallegos said.

Pueblo County School Board President Ted Ortiviz said it was important to approve the request, despite the Pueblo City Schools’ Board of Education decision earlier this month not to allow District 70 to have bus stops in the city.

“We feel that the District 60 school board missed an opportunity to put kids first, and that’s what this school board did today. We put kids first. I was elected to put kids first and that’s simply what I did,” said Ted Ortiviz, Pueblo County school board president.

No District 60 board members were at the meeting.
