Loose rocks create driving, outdoor recreation problems

The rain in the last few weeks has created multiple problems in southern Colorado.

On Monday, a rockslide caused part of Manitou Avenue to close. It is blocked off from Serpentine Drive to the eastbound ramp onto Highway 24. CDOT said engineers will be there Tuesday to determine what needs to be done to make sure it is safe. Serpentine Drive is also closed from the Highway 24 eastbound ramp to Manitou Avenue.

On Sunday, a boulder fell on a hiker in Palmer Park, in Colorado Springs. He was rescued and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space is currently closed, and Garden of the Gods and North Cheyenne Caon are closed to climbing. A city spokesperson said all the rain in the last few weeks has saturated the rock formation, and the sandstone is very fragile and wet.
