Driver in Fatal State Patrol Crash Says Accelerator was Stuck

The driver accused of killing a Colorado State Patrol cadet and critically injuring a trooper says he crashed into them after his car accelerator got stuck.

Authorities say 27-year-old Christopher Gebers was fleeing a traffic stop Saturday in Weld County when he plowed into the scene of a separate accident investigation being conducted by state troopers.

The cadet, 21-year-old Taylor Thyfault, and 37-year-old trooper Clinton Rushing were hit while putting out spikes to stop Gebers.

According to an arrest affidavit, witnesses heard Gebers say the crash wasn’t his fault because the emergency brake on his Honda locked up and the accelerator was stuck. Gebers also told police the same thing.

Gebers is being held in the Boulder County jail Monday and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
