Basements near Broadmoor flooded by groundwater
First it was high water in a creek and now a high water table underground is affecting many basements in southwest Colorado Springs.
Neighbors along Cheyenne Creek, which flooded in September 2013, said groundwater seeping into basements has ruined carpets and floors.
“It’s because the ground is already soaked and we keep getting rain, and the water has to go somewhere,” said Andi Chernushin, one of the affected neighbors.
Chernushin said the water table is higher than it’s ever been since she moved in 16 years ago.
“I’m tired of it,” she said. “We’ve had almost two years of flooding issues.”
Many basement sump pumps, which rarely turned on before this spring’s wet weather, now run almost constantly to remove excess water.
Chernushin said the flooding also has damaged new furnaces and water heaters replaced by homeowners after the 2013 flood.
While coping with the new flooding source, neighbors are watching the creek with concern. The level has been high but nowhere near 2013 flood levels.
