Trails, parks closed due to heavy rains, flooding
The City of Colorado Springs reported more damage from recent heavy rains.
As of Tuesday afternoon (5/19), there were multiple closures of parks and trails in Colorado Springs.
City Parks and Trails Closures:
The Midland Trail between 26th Street and Ridge Road Pikes Peak Greenway Trail between Polk Street and Tremont Street Red Rock Canyon Open Space due to the extensive damage caused by recent rains and a dam breach within Sand Canyon. At this time, no private property is affected. Park staffs is assessing damage and trail conditions throughout the entire property. Foot Hills Trail within Garden of the Gods between Gateway Road and the Navigators. Pikes Peak Greenway Trail between Nevada Avenue and El Pomar Youth Sports Park
Minimal damage to streets and roads was reported. One lane of southbound traffic was closed on Tutt Boulevard just north of Stetson Hills Boulevard. There was water and debris in the road from a private detention basin failure. Street crews were still working to inspect infrastructure and repair sinkholes, drainages and other damage.
The debris basins serving Camp Creek, South Douglas Creek and North Douglas creek were filled to capacity. The city says the basins were still working and were slowing down flows and catching larger debris. The city will clean the basins as soon as weather permits.
If you have flood damage at your home the city recommends calling Pikes Peak United Way 2-1-1 to receive information and referrals. Flooded basements are not covered by FEMA Individual Assistance and the state does not have a program that covers flooded basements. FEMA Individual Assistance may only cover flood damages above the first 18 to 24 inches on the ground floor. For more information, contact your homeowners insurance comapny or visit floodsmart.gov.
