Potholes cause tipover; woman takes action

A forklift driver ended up in the hospital Wednesday, after hitting a pothole and flipping over.

It happened at the intersection of Southmoor Drive and Puerta Road in Fountain.

“He flipped, and I’m going, “Oh my God, I’m calling 911,” witness Christine Iverson said.

The driver was taken to the hospital. Iverson said he hurt his shoulder.

Across town, in Colorado Springs, a pothole got so big and deep a woman took action.

“I came, checked it out and started gathering chunks that had flown out. There were some chunks in the middle of the lane that I didn’t want anybody to hit, and rocks and just started trying to put some stuff in it that wasn’t pointy in order to ameliorate the issue when somebody might hit it,” June Aguilar said.

The city of Colorado Springs advises against that. They invite residents to report the potholes instead online or by calling 385-ROAD.

Travis Easton, Public Works Director, said filling the potholes is a temporary fix. The real solution would be to repave streets, and they are assessing their options. He said the department is considering seeking a supplemental appropriation from the city’s budget.

He said often, the city responds to reports of potholes, but once they’re fixed, more will form only feet away.
