More Mudslides on Highway 24

George Stultz moved to his own little piece of paradise more than 30 years ago.

“It’s like living in the wild west,” he said.

Wild perfectly describes the weather we’ve seen over the last week. The result, another mud slide on Highway 24.

The water took out the road leading to the Stultz house, taking half a dozen trees with it. Mudslides have been happening here for several years.

“Since the fire, (we’ve seen) the flash flooding and the mudslides,” said Stultz.

The extra mud and dirt wound up on Highway 24, where Colorado Department of Transportation crews quickly swept it away.

Both state and local crews are trying to keep roads and bridges from washing out.

Brad Shaw from the Teller County Transportation Department said, “anytime we get rain or snow we have to check these bridges out to make sure everything is working right.”

As for Stultz, the stormy weather makes him very nervous.

“I’m thinking we’re going to have problems,” he said.

But the Stultz’ hope the Waldo Canyon burn scar will heal quickly. Before they lose their little piece of paradise forever.
