Severe weather creates more potholes in Southern Colorado

Recent severe weather is not helping with pothole repairs.

Heavy rain is setting back the city’s repair efforts and making road crews fight an uphill battle.

“Just the sheer volume of water we received I think has been a major, major impact to our infrastructure,” Colorado Springs Streets Division manager Corey Farkas said. “It’s not just the potholes, but it’s the cracking in the street,” he said.

Damaged roads are creating difficult driving conditions throughout Southern Colorado.

“It’s like driving an obstacle course,” Cripple Creek resident Tom Heywood said. “You have to keep your eyes open.”

Road crews have their hands full after another weekend of storms.

“We’ve got a finite amount of resources available to us and at this point, we’re addressing sink holes and storm damage around town,” Farkas said. “At our current funding levels, it’s going to take us 67.9 years to get where we need to be.”

Drivers will have to wait as crews work to repair increasing damage to city streets.

“There’s a lot of pot holes, and there’s a lot of road, and just a few people to take care of the job,” Colorado Springs resident Dana Henry said. “They work pretty hard to take care of the roads.”
