Pueblo teen rescued in the Arkansas River

A 15-year-old boy was trapped in the middle of the Arkansas River Sunday and rescued by emergency crews.

The teen told Pueblo firefighters he was knee high in water and when a heavy current came, the water went up to his neck. He grabbed on to a rock for safety. The boy was trapped under the Moffat Bridge near Santa Fe Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. The fire department said another teenager was in the water, but he was able to get on to shore safely.

The fire department said both boys were fishing in the middle of the river.

Joe Miera said he was walking around the river when he saw the boy was stuck. He called 911.

“My first reaction was to call and get help,” he said.

Pueblo rescue teams were able to save the teen by sending him a life preserver and having a line attached to him so he could walk against the current and onto shore.

Both boys were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
