Severe weather leaves a mess in southern Colorado
Mother Nature is leaving her mark in southern Colorado. Flash floods caused problems for people in the area.
Cathy Todd, who manages Belmont Stables, said it has been a busy day since she was moving her horses away from the severe storms. Her property is being swept away by Fountain Creek in Pueblo.
“It’s very dangerous, the banks fall a couple feet at a time,” Todd said.
Todd said she has lost more than 200 feet of land along with a horse stable.
La Junta farmer Johnny Palmer can relate. A flood created a canal breach which swept away some of his onion crop. He said he literally watched his money wash away.
The rushing water not only ruined Palmer’s onions, it also closed Highway 196 between La Junta and Las Animas.
La Junta wasn’t the only place that experienced flooding. Water covered Highway 50 in Avondale. The water also reached the property of Greg Gallegos
“(Friday) night, it was a river going into my yard,” he said.
But, Gallegos did have the help of his family to dig a ditch so that future floods won’t reach his doorstep.
