Collapsed retaining wall forcing evacuations
neighborhood is on edge as a neighbor’s 36- foot retaining wall is collapsing. it’s an update to a story we brought you earlier this week. the collapse forced road closures and home evacuations on golden avenue near wheeler avenue. evacuees still don’t ow when they’ll be able to return home… and they were told it could be as much as 30 days. krdo newschannel 13’s zach pagano is speaking with neighbors about their concerns. a retaing wall proving no match against another round of flooding. with all the rain it just made the whole wall slide down leif lenberg has been watching the wall collapse since tuesday. but he says things have gotten much worse. i ran back here and the whole wall has slid down about 20 or 30 feet things just go from bad to worse in the world of poorly built retaing walls. They don’t go from bad to better. neighbors shared concerns about the wall with us last year. Look at those cement blocks. If we had a flash flood like we had last year that stuff would wash right down in here in my backyard. the collapse forced the evacuation of two homes. neighbors tell us kids were outside when the wall started falling down. The first dozen blocks or so came down01:06 they were scared crazy, because there’s a dozen two- thousand pound blocks rolling toward their house and they’re out playing in the yard. city crews are still assesing the damage. if those blocks would have failed at the top, they could’ve tumbled and tumbled down the hill and we could have had some catastrophic property loss. neighbors are watching closely and say they hope the damage is over. in colorado springs, zach pagano, krdo newschannel 13. city crews will continue to monitor the wall tonight. they say wet and
