southern colorado landmark for nearly 50 years. bishop castle. jim bishop built it by hand in the san isabel national forest it attracts visitors from all over the world. but jim and his wife say they are no longer the sole owners of the property. krdo newschannel 13’s zach pagano tells us why the couple believes they’re being steam-rolled. It was 10 years of digging and dynamiting, moving dirt, and all that kind of stuff, picking up rocks. jim bishop started building his masterpiece in june of 1969. It just grew, with no blueprints or plans, all from Jim’s head. One piece of construction led to another piece of construction. jim’s vision quickly turned into a popular landmark. when they come in and they say do you own the castle, we tell them no you do. Yeah, the land and all of that. It belongs to the people. but the castle’s ownership is complicated. jim is battling cancer … so the bishops asked a friend to help run the property. We appointed him trustee. And he took it upon himself to assume he was the owner of it because his name is on it. pheobe says the new trustee… david merrill… hasn’t been holding up his end of the deal … making changes to the property without the bishops consent. this man, in my opinion, and I’m entitled to my opinion, took advantage of jim and used jim to take advantage of me. jim says the castle still means a lot to him. Everything, except, the only thing more is my family.
